Zamboanga's Vintas and Yakan Fabrics

Hello everyone! My name is Chrizle Maghanoy. I was born in the Philippines and moved to the US 9 years ago. I am a surgical technician in the Army and was stationed in Alaska, which is why I'm with UAF. I am currently stationed at Fort Carson, CO,  and about to leave for Kuwait in a few weeks for rotation. I am fortunate to live in the mountains again since I love snowboarding and hiking. I'm excited to learn from this course, and I can't wait to learn with you all!

        Philippine Vintas

Every year in my Home-country, the Philippines, we celebrate the colorful Hermosa festival. Zamboanga City is proud of its diverse culture with several Muslim tribes and its Spanish heritage making it a unique city in the country. Our city is known for its colorful vinta boats, made by the Baja and Moros peoples. It symbolizes the culture and history of Zamboanga. My family and I enjoyed watching the colorful boat competition participated by the natives in the city.

I've always been fascinated by Art. My mom is a painter, and she taught us how to draw since we were little. I didn't get her talent, but I have her paintings with me placed on my wall. I always get compliments from my friends about her work.

I learned to appreciate Art because of her. She took us to a Yakan village and witnessed a fantastic design made by the natives. They used plants such as pineapple and abaca and converted them into fibers for weaving. It is fascinating how these colorful combinations of dyed fibers can make intricate designs.

  4. Hi Chrizle, it seems like we have a lot in common! I too was stationed in Alaska and I'm now stationed at Ft Carson, such a small army. It's so cool that you included art from your culture in the Philippines. My husband is Filipino and his family is from Ilocos Norte. I don't know too much about art from that region, but reading what you wrote about the boats and the Hermosa festival makes me want to learn more. The anthropology of cultural art is so intriguing to me and I love seeing the different ways people create art, so your blog was especially interesting to me!
